Free, plain-English guides to passing your UK theory and practical tests โ€” and staying safe in your first two years on the road.

UK Theory Test Guide

Everything you need to know to walk into your DVSA theory test prepared.

  • Two parts: 50 multiple-choice questions plus the hazard perception clip test.
  • Pass mark is 43 out of 50 on the multiple-choice section.
  • Hazard perception: 14 video clips, 15 developing hazards, scored 0โ€“5 per hazard.
  • Total test time is around 57 minutes including instructions and a short practice run.
  • Best preparation: short, regular practice sessions across every Highway Code topic, then full timed mocks in the final two weeks.

Provisional Licence Guide

When and how to apply for your provisional driving licence in the UK.

  • You can apply for your provisional licence from age 15 years and 9 months.
  • You can drive a car from your 17th birthday (or 16 if you receive enhanced PIP).
  • You'll need: an identity document, addresses for the last 3 years, your National Insurance number, and the application fee.
  • Apply online via GOV.UK โ€” it's the fastest and cheapest route.
  • Keep your provisional safe: you must bring it to every lesson, your theory test and your practical test.

Road Signs Overview

A quick orientation to the four families of UK road signs you'll meet on test day.

  • Warning signs โ€” usually triangular with a red border. They warn of a hazard ahead, like a bend, school or junction.
  • Mandatory signs โ€” usually circular with a blue background. They tell you what you MUST do (e.g. turn left, minimum speed).
  • Prohibitory signs โ€” usually circular with a red border. They tell you what you must NOT do (e.g. no entry, no overtaking, speed limits).
  • Information signs โ€” usually rectangular. They give directions, route numbers, services and tourist information.
  • Learn the shape and colour first โ€” it tells you the sign's purpose before you even read the symbol.

Hazard Perception Guide

Hazard perception is half the theory test. Here's how scoring works and how to train for it.

  • A developing hazard is something that makes you change speed or direction โ€” not just anything moving on screen.
  • Each clip contains one scoring hazard (one clip has two). You score 5 if you click as the hazard begins to develop, dropping to 0 the later you click.
  • Clicking wildly or in a regular pattern triggers an anti-cheat: you'll score 0 for that clip.
  • Best technique: keep eyes scanning the whole scene, click once as you notice a hazard developing, then click again a moment later to bracket it.
  • Practise on a screen of similar size to the test โ€” phones are not ideal for final prep.

Mock Test Preparation

A focused plan that gets most learners to a confident pass.

  • Revise by topic first (alertness, attitude, vehicle handling, safety, etc.), then move to mixed mocks.
  • Common weak areas: stopping distances, vulnerable road users, motorway rules, and meanings of less-common signs.
  • Sit a timed full mock at least twice a week in the final fortnight โ€” pressure changes how you read questions.
  • Review every wrong answer. Understanding why an answer is wrong is more valuable than memorising the right one.
  • Aim for 47/50 consistently on mocks before booking your real test.

New Driver Rules

The first two years after you pass are governed by the New Drivers Act.

  • Get 6 or more penalty points within 2 years of passing and your licence is automatically revoked.
  • You'd then have to reapply for a provisional licence and pass both theory and practical tests again.
  • Common offences that add points: speeding, using a phone at the wheel, careless driving.
  • Build safe habits early: keep to the limit, leave a 2-second gap, scan mirrors every 5โ€“8 seconds, and never use your phone while moving.
  • Insurance is highest in year one โ€” a black-box policy and an advanced driving course (Pass Plus) can lower it.
